Retirement – a Mindset
Life is about transition and change and we need to lean into it. From the time we are conceived, we start to die. Although this is truth, the conversation does not cross our minds. What we need is to see the blessing life is and live it to the fullest. Most of society does not see the blessings until something traumatic happens to their life on a personal level.
As a child, we spend the time in play with extraordinarily little planning, unless it comes from parents. As we near graduation we are told to make plans for our future. We are not taught to look at retirement when we are making this plan. It normally involves the next 10-15 years of your life. This typically means university or trade school, work, getting married or not, children or not, and buying your first home. Depending on your income at the age of thirty-five, you could be saving for children’s education or start on your retirement fund. What are you investing in? This is what grows.
What does this mean for the big iceberg retirement is. We are so busy concentrating on the 10% financial side, we forget or do not realize that 90 % is below the surface, just like an iceberg. When we think of retirement, we think of financial planning. This is important. What is missing is the emotional and social components of this significant part of our lives. This is the plan or to-do list that runs out after 3 months of your retirement and then you are out of breath.
Did you know:
- Retirement is the 10th out of 43rd most stressful life events.
- Relationships and health deteriorate, meanwhile there is an increase in our life span to the age of eighty. This is a 30% increase since 1962.
- Canada Census data from 2016 indicated there are 8,000 reaching one hundred years.
- Ontario has both the wealthiest and poorest seniors in the country, with a sizable number of seniors with an income of $25,000 or less. The chart divides it into income buckets and 4.1% of seniors have a take-home pay of $100,000-$124.000.
- Even the topic of “freedom 55” is not a reality for many of us and the reality is you are not saving and investing enough money.
- In 2021, the number of retirees remaining in the workplace after the age of sixty-five has increased 4% over the year before.
Although there is much to be celebrated after a lifetime of work, we need to remember addiction, anxiety, depression, and suicide are significant risk factors. These are items which do not get spoken about when the topic of retirement shows up in conversation.
There are challenges which arrive with aging and often adjustments which need to be made to fit the lifestyle. It is an exciting time to learn, grow and evolve into your next stage of life with all the wisdom within you. People chose whether they would fully remain open to the possibilities of living each day.
Science is discovering the secret to health and longevity has more to do with physical surroundings, personal attitudes, and significant relationships, than our biology.
A rich life in retirement is not just about the money. Reframing the narrative requires a plan that goes beyond the monetary and making investments in new kinds of investments in assets for a richer life, including wellness, community, and purpose.
