About Mark Nixon
Mark Nixon is a Registered Psychotherapist with 15 years of experience in the mental health field. He is also the Clinical Director and co-founder of MyLife Counselling. Mark holds a Masters in Counselling Psychology from City University in Victoria, BC and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Guelph in Psychology and Philosophy.
Mark was born in Guelph and has been helping individuals in his community from all walks of life through painful and challenging times in their lives. He started his work as a youth support worker in Guelph at Change Now, then as a crisis line worker with Community Torch Light, and a research associate with the Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo-Wellington Dufferin.
After finishing his advanced studies in Counselling Psychology in Victoria, BC, he completed his internships at Citizens Counselling Centre and went on to work at the Men’s Trauma Centre before starting his own private practice.
As both an individual and couples counsellor, Mark has felt privileged to work with a wide range of people through anger, anxiety, depression, loss, and relationship conflict. His special focus in on helping people who’ve experienced violence, abuse, and trauma in their lives.
Mark also personally knows what it’s like to deal with mental health issues in the family and traumatic loss. Having lost a parent to suicide, he is acutely aware of the importance of addressing mental health issues early on not letting anxiety and depression go unacknowledged.
Clients describe Mark as gentle, kind, and non-judgmental. He’ll help you feel safe and speak freely about your thoughts and feelings that you may have difficulty talking about with others. He’ll help you make sense of your experience and support you in better understanding yourself and your relationships. In turn, you’ll discover new ways for you to create the most effective change in your life.
Mark draws from a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches including: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Person Centered Therapy, and Trauma Informed Practices. He’s completed advanced training in Gottman Method couples counselling, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Cybercounselling (online counselling).
In his free time, Mark is an avid photographer. He looks forward to photographing outdoor family adventures with his two sons and wife of 20 years.
