About Emily Hansen

Emily Hansen is a Registered Psychotherapist and holds a Master’s Degree in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy and an Honours Degree in Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Emily is highly experienced working with adults, teens, children, and families through a range of issues including anxiety, depression, anger, and complex family issues.

Emily completed her internship at Carizon Family and Community Services in Kitchener where she helped children, adolescents, and adults in collaboration with Women’s Crisis Services and the Family Violence Project. Her work at Stonehenge Therapeutic Community as a Behavioural Counsellor has also prepared her to support people experiencing addiction and trauma.

In addition to her work at MyLife Counselling, Emily is also the Program Coordinator and Child and Youth Worker for the EIEIO program at Woodview Mental Health and Autism Services in Burlington. There, she helps children showing signs of significant social, emotional and/or behavioural problems who are having difficulty at school and at home. Through her individual and family counselling, Emily helps youth 6-8 years of age and their families learn social skills, improve peer relationships, create individualized learning plans, and provide parenting strategies and support.

Emily has a special interest in helping people struggling with an existing or new diagnosis of a chronic illness. As a person managing her own chronic illness, she understands the complex physical and emotional needs that accompany the healing and relapse process. Emily helps people regain a positive sense of self and meaning after their diagnosis, in addition to teaching people how to assertively communicate their new needs with others. Emily is warm, grounded, and down-to-earth in her counselling approach.  Her background in Positive Psychology enables her to help individuals discover their strengths and apply these towards living more meaningful and fulfilling lives.

In her personal life, Emily incorporates music and mindfulness as ways of maintaining her own well-being. She also balances her time in the office with her love of outdoor activities such as gardening and winter camping.
