About Emily McTier
Emily McTier is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) #17763 and a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. She is pursuing her Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University and previously completed her Bachelors of Applied Science at the University of Guelph. Emily is currently completing her internship at MyLife Counselling under the supervision of Katherine Schmidt. She is happy to provide a reduced rate to make therapy more accessible to the community.
Emily has extensive experience supporting adults across several helping settings. Her own personal healing journey has also helped her appreciate therapy’s value as a tool to support and guide her during challenging times. She’s now inspired to be there for others and see them through such difficulties as anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, student issues, and relationship challenges.
One of Emily’s current passions includes supporting students adjusting to college and university life. She understands the unique challenges students face during this pivotal time. Emily creates a safe and non-judgmental space where students can be fully themselves and begin to explore what this transition means for them. She combines practical coping skills with a deep understanding of the increased academic pressures, stress, anxiety, identity exploration, and relationship issues that students often face. Emily is committed to helping students regain their sense of confidence, resilience, and ability to thrive both academically and personally.
Helping clients through depression is another of Emily’s areas of focus. In particular, she understands how depression can worsen or be triggered by the darker fall and winter months. Emily helps her clients understand and work through their loss of interest in everyday activities, irritability, persistent sadness, and low self-esteem that comes with depression. She helps her clients learn ways to improve their daily routines, find joy again in their relationships and interests, and rebuild a positive sense of self regardless of the season.
Emily uses a client-centred and integrative approach to her work, drawing on a variety of therapeutic modalities such as internal family systems, cognitive-behavioural therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy.
Emily is at her own best when she’s living a well-rounded healthy lifestyle. Outside of the therapy office you can find her taking part in fitness classes, hiking, and spending time with loved ones.
