About Suzanne Muscat
Suzanne is a Registered Psychotherapist with over 16 years of experience. She is a graduate of the highly regarded Couple & Family Therapy program at the University of Guelph. Suzanne is also an Associate member of the Ontario Association of Family Mediators.
Suzanne is extremely skilled working with adults, couples and families. Her outstanding contributions in the field led to the Hospital for Sick Children awarding her the Elizabeth Manson Award for Clinical Excellence in the Field of Children’s Mental Health in 2016.
Having worked as a Child Witness Program and Peaceful Alternatives Support Group facilitator for many years, she understands how people are impacted by witnessing or experiencing violence and abuse in their lives. She’s made it her focus to help individuals through the impacts of verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse. These impacts can include anxiety, aggression, sexualized behaviours, depression, and other symptoms of post-traumatic stress.
Suzanne is also committed to helping families and parents navigate the challenges of divorce, decision making, and parenting time with their children. She helps parents develop the awareness, understanding, and skills necessary to support their children through these major changes in their lives.
As an experienced marriage and couple’s therapist, Suzanne uses an attachment framework to help partners rebuild a sense of understanding and connection in their relationships. Having worked for years with high conflict couples, she is skilled at helping partners identify and change their negative cycles. Couples can be assured that Suzanne will create the safety and structure needed to work through such challenging issues as betrayal, loss of intimacy, parenting, and communication breakdowns.
Suzanne also offers trauma-informed mediation to clients who are in the process of separation or divorce. She helps both parties navigate through this stressful life transition with an emphasis on prioritizing mental and emotional well being. Suzanne helps create customized separation and parenting plans to best meet both parties’ unique needs.
Suzanne also enjoys working with individuals and adults through a range of issues including anxiety, relationship issues, depression, trauma, grief and loss. Her extensive knowledge of trauma and abuse in particular helps many adult survivors work through the shame and guilt they can carry later in life. Suzanne’s approach is warm, non-judgmental, and extremely respectful. She views people as experts in their own lives and helps individuals identify the skills, values, and abilities that they can use to regain their peace-of-mind. Suzanne works collaboratively with her clients which means she listens closely to what each individual client needs out of therapy and adjusts her approach accordingly.
As a mother of two teenagers, and a yellow lab pup, Suzanne can personally relate to the challenges and joys of raising a family. She keeps herself balanced through her passion for yoga and hiking.
