Managing Stress in Your Workday: A Coaching Guide to Positive Habits and Career Clarity
Roblynn Hunnisett, Personal Development Coach, Certified Retirement Coach, MBA
In the rhythm of our workdays, stress often arrives quietly, sometimes as a whisper and sometimes as a full wave. It can be the pressure of expectations, the weight of decision-making, or the feeling of moving faster than your own breath.
But stress is not a failure. It is information. When we learn to pause, listen, and respond with intention, our entire career experience shifts.
This is your reminder: you are allowed to work in a way which honours your wellbeing and supports your growth. You do not have to choose one or the other.
Within coaching, I often say: “Your body speaks before your mind catches up.” Stress shows up to get your attention.
Instead of resisting it, try asking:
- What is this moment trying to tell me?
- Where is the tension, and what does it need?
- Is this stress rooted in fear, volume, boundary, or expectation?
When you allow yourself to be curious instead of critical, clarity rises.
Everyday Habits Which Rebalance Your Workday
These habits are small, approachable, and deeply supportive when practiced consistently. They keep you connected to yourself in the middle of busy days. A short ritual grounds you before the day takes off. I use these myself daily.
-
Begin with A Centering Moment
- Three slow breaths
- A simple intention such as: “I choose steadiness today.”
- A moment of quiet before you open your laptop. This is not about perfection it is about presence.
-
Honour Micro-Pauses
Your nervous system needs space to reset. Throughout your day, gift yourself short, meaningful pauses:
- Stand and stretch, an hourly adventure as movement is important for our mind.
- Step outside and let daylight reach your eyes
- Place your hand on your heart and breathe
These are not interruptions to productivity, but they are investments in clarity.
-
Communicate Boundaries with Confidence
Boundaries hold your energy, protect your time, and create trust. Try language that is respectful and firm:
- “I can take this on, and I’ll need to adjust Priority A. Which would you prefer?”
- “I can deliver this item by tomorrow afternoon.”
- “I need more context before I can give a clear answer.”
Boundaries are not walls; they are guideposts. This can be a hard part for many people. Remember you have only so much capacity and if you overextend yourself, you will get burnt-out.
-
End your Day with a Gentle Closing Ritual
A closing ritual signals to your mind and body your workday has finished.
- Writing down three things you completed
- Write down 5 things and note one focus for tomorrow
- Clean and organize your desk, releasing anything unfinished by placing it on paper
This practice keeps you from carrying your work home emotionally. A walk or exercise after your workday can be liberating as well.
Although, there will be days that you can not make all these ideas work for you, it is about the intention. For me, boundaries can get a little wobbly, especially it I have not had enough sleep. I know this by my tone of voice. It becomes the moment to recognize it and then reset my intention.
Long -Term Habits for a Positive, Aligned Career
Career development is not linear; it is a weaving. A series of choices, reflections, pauses, and new beginnings are habits which support you through the long arc of your career. Here are a few questions I ask during a coaching session on career management.
-
Reflect Monthly
Pause and ask:
- What expanded me?
- What drained me?
- What did I learn about my strengths?
- What surprised me about myself?
Reflection creates direction.
-
Seek Supportive Circles
Growth thrives in community. Look for people who:
- Stretch your thinking
- Model the leadership style you admire
- Support your goals without agenda
Your circle influences your confidence and clarity.
-
Align your Work with Your Values
When your career honours your values, stress decreases and fulfillment rises. Ask yourself:
- Is the work I’m doing aligned with the impact I want to have?
- Do my daily tasks reflect what matters to me?
- Where do I feel most like myself?
Values act as your internal compass.
-
Stay Curious about your Future Self
Your future career is built through curiosity, not pressure. Explore:
- New skills
- Projects that stretch you
- Conversations with leaders
- Ideas that spark interest
Curiosity is a gentle form of courage.
Your workday does not have to be a battleground. Your career does not have to be a climb marked only by exhaustion. You can leave that for the climbing gym.
You are allowed to create a path that is spacious, intentional, and deeply aligned with who you are becoming. Challenges will still arrive but your relationship with them can change. With gentle habits, clear boundaries, and ongoing self-reflection, you can build a career which supports your growth, resilience, and wellbeing.
If you are curious about guiding yourself into a growth pattern in your career, I would be happy to help you thrive in this area. Roblynn Hunnisett – MyLife Counselling Guelph
