About Emily Barrie (she/they)

Emily Barrie is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with a master’s degree in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy from Wilfrid Laurier University and an Honours Degree in Human Rights and Gender Studies from Carleton. She is an Integrative Somatic Therapist, bodyworker, and trauma-informed movement educator, with over 10 years of experience leading community somatic practice.

Emily collaborates experientially with clients to support them in connecting to their body as a key source of wisdom and healing. She has completed over one thousand hours of training in body-based approaches to healing trauma, including yoga, therapeutic applications of expressive arts, and Integrative Somatic Therapy Practice. Emily is called forth by creative and embodied ways of integrating trauma and loves to collaborate with clients to incorporate gentle arts- and play-based approaches in her somatic therapy work.

Somatic therapy is a body-based and trauma-informed approach that centers the experience of the body and nervous system in therapy. This approach seeks to invite more safety into one’s body by growing our capacity to be with emotions and sensations. A somatic therapy session might include breathing, gentle movement, creative expression in the form of art or play, or sensorimotor processing of emotions or sensations.

Emily’s approach is gentle, client-centered, and naturally holistic. By inviting the body, breath, and creative expression into session, clients may also wish to invite spiritual or ancestral/cultural practices which feel meaningful for them. Emily seeks to create space for clients to explore all aspects of their identity as desired, including spiritual, ancestral, or transpersonal dimensions.

Prior to completing her master’s degree in Psychotherapy, Emily was a Full-Spectrum Birth worker supporting survivors of trauma and their families through all stages of the perinatal experience. In this work, Emily developed a special appreciation for working with 2SLGBTQ+ folks as they navigate experiences of conception, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Emily completed her internship at Hope for Families Counselling Centre, where she offered somatic trauma therapy and ran community drop-in spaces for gender creative families. Emily is a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and is enthusiastic about supporting individuals, couples and families through issues related to 2SLGBTQ+ identity, gender transitioning, and finding and embodying queer joy.

In her personal life, Emily is an artist and musician, and community volunteer. She loves spending time with her friends and family, especially in nature, and going on bike rides with her kid.
